I stopped by a shoot in Los Angeles with my best bud Joakim, one half of Forever Kid, and threw a quick 10 questions his way.  We chatted everything from street art to Eggo® Waffles, Kangaroo Court to who’s cute.  They’ve also recut and rereleased the first remix they ever did, a classic by Whitney Houston, their way of looking back as they take the next big step.  I love Whitney Houston.

Whitney Houston – How Will I Know (Forever Kid Antique Recut) by Forever Kid

Read the interview here:

GDD: We owe you a drink, what’ll it be?

FK: Chocolate Milk, please.

GDD: Describe Forever Kid in one sentence.

FK: Doing whatever you want, whenever you want, and dancing more than the average person.

GDD: You guys have torn through a few decades of pop music here in your remixes.  Now you are re-releasing your first track.  Why is that?

FK: Well, look… this track is special to me because it was the first track we released that got traction online.  It’s a banging, Swedish House/big room/progressive track in all its glory, coupled with vocals from the amazing, late Whitney Houston…whats not to like? No, I’m just kidding… But in all seriousness, we wanted to re-release it to show where we were when we started and then let our new music show where we are going with our sound.  Times are changing…

GDD: What did you want to be when you grew up?

FK: “Cowboys and Indians (Native Americans)” was big and everyone wanted to be a Cowbow.  So when I grew up, I of course wanted to be an Indian.

GDD: You’re aligned with LA street artist Annie Preece.  We don’t see much cross-over between street art and dance music, how did that collaboration come about?

FK: Annie is one of the most amazingly talented babes I’ve met. She loves painting rainbow unicorns, and ironically enough, I’m a professional unicorn tamer… So naturally, we became close friends and started creating some cool stuff together.

GDD: You’ve had some fun in the name of the motto #RefuseToGrowUp.  What does that mean to you?

FK: Well, there was a point when we both realized that all of our friends were so focused on growing up, getting a job and making a certain amount of money doing a certain job blah, blah, bleh.. blah. The only thing that mattered was the title, or the salary…. which I just don’t vibe with. Don’t get me wrong, having a great job is cool if you enjoy yourself… but nothing is more important than living in the moment and enjoying yourself and doing what you love with the people you love every single day.

GDD: What’s the best moment been thus far for you guys?

FK: That’s tough….I would say there were two best moments.

First was our BeeGees remix going #1 on Hype Machine. Major labels started reaching out to us and it was pretty humbling.

Second, is when we had a chance to do our first official remix with Capital Cities. That track has really taken off for us and Capital Cities have been real supportive along the way.

GDD: What are you currently looking forward to?

FK: We have been working so hard to create something new and special and different with our EP so I’m stoked to release some original music.

Also, our first official private show in Los Angeles….Foreverland…which is this Saturday actually, March 1st.

GDD:  What do you have in store for us with this “Foreverland?”

FK: Some cool funky tunes, some cool unique art… weird outfits and really rad people….but I’m gonna make you wait until Saturday and see for yourself.

GDD: Fair enough.  😉

GDD: I hear you are creating a new label. Tell me about that.

FK: After having meetings with a bunch of different people, we have come to realize that the best solution for us is to create a new fresh platform to release our music on.

GDD: Sounds killer, does it have a name?

FK: Infinite Youth Music Group.

GDD: Where do you draw inspiration?  Artists, genres, sounds?

FK: As far as types of music, I would say classical music when it comes to writing the tracks and the melodies because my other half has been classically trained since he was four.  Definitely rock n roll when it comes to the grit/distortion aspect of our sound and the inspiration for drums. We can sit for hours and listen to rock songs in order to find that perfect drum fill.  At the same time there are a lot of disco tunes that we take inspiration from. I grew up with a mother who claims to be the “disco queen…”

And as far as artists go…Digitalism and Justice are inspirational because not only did they create a unique sound unlike anybody else at that time, but they pushed dance music forward opening new doors for other artists.

Do you have a crush on anyone in the music industry?

Liv Nervo. She knows it. Great girl. I’m not gonna say anything more…

GDD: Strong choice.  Thanks Joakim and thank you Forever Kid!

Lots of love,

Stevie
